What should you do when wedding guests haven't RSVPed?

Last updated: 2026-11-02

Give it a few days past your RSVP deadline, then text each silent household once with a yes-or-no question. About a week later, send a final note that names the date your caterer needs a count. Call whoever is left, and set a date after which a non-reply counts as a no (Text My Wedding, Paperlust).

How long after the deadline should you start following up?

Most guides say to wait a little, but they disagree on how long. Text My Wedding suggests about three days past the reply-by date (Text My Wedding). Paperlust says a full week, to allow for mailed cards still in transit (Paperlust).

Pick the shorter wait if guests replied online and the longer one if you sent paper reply cards. Either way, plan the chase backward from your caterer's date, which most contracts set 7 to 14 days before the wedding (ChungDoi).

What should the first reminder say?

Keep it to one or two sentences with a question the guest can answer in one word. The Knot advises against a group chat or a mass email to everyone who missed the deadline, because it can embarrass people; message each household on its own (The Knot).

An example you can adapt:

"Hi Sam, we're finalizing numbers for the wedding on June 12. Can you and Jess make it? A yes or no is all we need."

If your wedding website holds the RSVP form, add the link. Joy adds the RSVP link to its reminders for you (Joy).

Who should make the follow-up calls?

Split the list by side of the family. The Knot suggests you call your friends and family while your partner calls theirs, and that you open with small talk before asking about the RSVP (The Knot). Paperlust goes further and gives the job to one person per side who is not the couple (Paperlust).

For older relatives, call instead of texting. Both Paperlust and ChungDoi give that advice (Paperlust, ChungDoi).

When can you count a non-reply as a no?

After a fixed number of tries or a fixed date, and you should tell guests that date in your final note. Paperlust caps it at three attempts (text, email, phone) before marking a guest as not attending (Paperlust). Text My Wedding sets a stop-waiting date two weeks past the reply-by date (Text My Wedding).

A guest who hears "we need your answer by the 13th for the caterer" knows what happens next, so the no you record later surprises no one.

How many guests usually miss the deadline?

Expect a real share of your list to go quiet. On Greenvelope, the median wedding gets replies from 88.9% of invitees, so about one in nine never answers through the platform (Greenvelope). On ChungDoi, the typical reply to an English-language wedding invitation arrives 16 days before the wedding (ChungDoi).

Reminders work. On QuikRSVP, about 4 in 10 replies arrive after a follow-up, on events that send one (QuikRSVP).

Can someone else do the chasing?

Yes, at a few levels of effort:

FAQ

Is it rude to text an RSVP reminder?

No. The Knot calls a text or email a valid option for guests you would rather not phone (The Knot). Send it to each household on its own, not to a group.

Should you remind guests before the RSVP deadline?

One reminder about a week before the deadline is common. ChungDoi's sample timeline places the first reminder a week before the reply-by date (ChungDoi). Save the direct follow-up for after the deadline.

How early should the RSVP deadline be?

The Knot recommends three to four weeks before the wedding, and no later than two weeks (The Knot). ChungDoi suggests working back from your caterer's date: subtract a week for chasing and a few days of grace (ChungDoi).
